The speculation around The Game Awards has been intense, notably after presenter Geoff Keighley posted a mysterious photo of a strange statue. The question has now been solved. Larian Studios is developing a fresh Divinity game.
Titled simply Divinity, the game was presented with a bold trailer packed with memorable imagery, from a burning man to an orgy and the very descent into chaos.
Not the Expected Sequel
Anyone anticipating Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. Larian clarified that a follow-up to its critically acclaimed RPGs is not on the cards right now.
However, the developer described this new Divinity as a next chapter of the main series. This distinction implies that the team could be crafting a faster-paced experience instead of another tactical title. Currently, we can only guess, as only a cinematic trailer is available.
A Pillar of Modern RPGs
The Divinity series is highly rated and many say it kicked off the contemporary revival of complex computer role-playing games. These games are known for rich lore, choice-driven narratives, and deep class systems—elements that later reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its setting is traditional swords and sorcery, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust bestowed upon the player.
Where many modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is full of specialized paths you can achieve by choosing a particular class or origin with a specific history of choices.
The series is also famously open-ended, enabling players to experiment throughout the entire experience. Nearly every quest can be approached in multiple ways, sometimes in lateral fashion.
- You might solve a puzzle because you remembered something an animal companion shared.
- Or, you could defeat a foe by moving environmental hazards in a clever way.
More to Come
It is precisely these elements that have cemented the series to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games ever made. Now, the RPG community can look forward to another adventure in this legendary franchise.
